Basketmouth, also known as Bright Okpocha, is a veteran Nigerian comedian and filmmaker who has made a startling admission on the misappropriation of funds by Nollywood producers.
In an interview with Arise TV, Basketmouth claimed that streaming services provide filmmakers with enormous sums of money.
However, the producers use only 10% of the money to make the film; the remainder is used to purchase homes and vehicles.
The comedian also said that when streaming sites pay performers directly, some producers force them to split the money.
Basketmouth continued that the producers who steal money from streaming services are well-known, but he would not name them.
He said, “There was a lot of money when these streaming platforms came in and these producers use only 10 percent of the monies to make the movies.
“More than 70 percent of these producers, to the extent that the streaming platforms had to pay the actors directly, but some of the producers coerce the actors to give up the monies.
“They know themselves, but I won’t mention names.”
This coincides with rumors that Nigerian filmmakers no longer receive funding from global streaming service NETFLIX to create unique material.
