It took a while to arrive. It was only a matter of time before superstar actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele reached the one billion mark in ticket sales at the box office, and indeed, she has done so with her latest movie, “A Tribe Called Judah” in less than one month of its release.
It was barely a week ago that Potpourri named her and Toyin Abraham the two leading ladies of Nigerian cinema. Little did we know, though, that Akindele would swim far apart from the others and reach a shore that no one in the Nigerian film industry dared to see.
Funke Akindele has grown into a titan, taking the top three spots on the list of the highest grossing Nollywood films ever. A Tribe Called Judah is number one with over a billion naira in ticket sales. In second place are yet two of Akindele’s movies, Battle on Buka Street and Omo Ghetto: The Saga, each with over 600 million naira in box office harvests.
